Family-run nursery Reading

Rob officially opens Reading nursery’s new garden Reading East MP, Rob Wilson, officially opened the new nursery garden at Wigwam Day Nursery on Fatherson Road on Friday 6th June 2008. The Wigwam, run by two sisters, Emma and Rebecca, is set in a converted Victorian townhouse in Reading and caters its services towards the needs of parents. The children made bunting for the occasion, played outside games, had face painting and a picnic tea. The nursery garden is the first step in a complete refurbishment of the nursery. The nursery planted a willow wigwam with a willow sculpture, created a vegetable patch, planted climbing scented flowers and laid new turf around their established apple and pear trees, covering the rest of the garden with colourful ‘wet pour’ (a spongy playground safety surface). In one corner, they installed a fixed climbing frame. The children were involved throughout the makeover, designing a safety poster, planting seeds and attracting wild birds into the garden, as well choosing the design for the flooring and murals. Rob was delighted with the result commenting, “I am so pleased to see a successful family-run nursery making real efforts to provide a high-level of tailored childcare for parents in my constituency. I am sure the kids will love the garden – the ‘wet pour’ playground is a particularly innovative way to combine fun with safety. Emma and Rebecca have done a fantastic job here so far and I wish them every success for the future.” Emma added, "Spending time outside is critical to children's learning and development and so we made it our first priority. But no job is ever finished and next we plan to start to create sensory panels and zones within the garden for the children to enjoy while they are outside, making the space a true outside room." www.thewigwamnursery.co.uk |
